Pacific Journey offers a variety of Marine Education programs that range from 3-days to 3-weeks for middle school through college students.  Pacific Journey works to enhance and improve the education level of students by providing an experiential program developed by members of the Pacific Journey management team over the last 12 years. Pacific Journey seeks to be a platform whereby students of all backgrounds and ages can learn about the importance and aesthetics of California and our world's oceans.  Through inquiry and experiential based marine science education, emphasizing pioneering and creative instruction, our students can gain a deep understanding of the issues of marine engineering, conservation and preservation of marine ecosystems, and issues that impact California's coast. Our students will leave our program prepared to further their education and pursue careers in marine biology.

Marine Education programs in the classroom offer very little hands-on experience for the students.  A live aboard ship-based program allows educators and students alike to learn first-hand about the Marine Environment.  Experiential Education The problem with most Marine Education programs offered in our Nations schools is the lack of exposure or access to the environment they are studying.  The company solves the problem by providing an at-sea program where the students are able to learn by total immersion in and on the Pacific Ocean.  In essence, their classroom is the ocean.  Our Marine Educators offer hands-on instruction through a variety of modules specifically designed to teach each student by observing and touching the specimens in their natural Marine Environment.  The company provides the unique opportunity for students and educators alike to gain a full appreciation for the ocean and all the wonderful creatures within it.  At the end of each trip, the students will walk off the ship prepared to become the future stewards of our coastlines and oceans.

Field Studies Program

Invertebrates

Students collect and study various invertebrates and the ecosystems they participate in a live classroom with our Staff Biologist, and in a low-impact up close experience they are introduced to Urchins, Hermit Crab, Horn Sharks, Tube Worms, Sea Stars, Flat Fish, Anemones, and many more.

Water Chemistry

From the ocean floor to our local watersheds, collection and analysis using on board equipment, students gain understanding of the nitrogen cycle and the impact our large coastal population has on our ecosystems.

The Ocean Floor

Have you ever wanted to explore the ocean floor with your own R.O.V.? Students will get the opportunity to investigate the ocean floor using a benthic grab sampler, and with the aid of live video.

Kelp Forest

Kayaking over the Kelp forest is an experience unlike any other! Students will get the opportunity to observe the Kelp Forest from above and below This unique ecosystem is has an amazing effect on our coastline. Using on board sup

Fish Diversity

Fish observation and identification takes time, as students are immersed over a period of several days they began to notice behavior and patterns of our local species.

Marine Mammals

Sea lions, Seals, Dolphins, and Whales are part of this exciting zodiac Safari on the open ocean! Part of being at sea is taking advantage of when and where these mammals will join us on our voyage.  Students investigate our local marine mammals by observing, and recording behavior.

Island Ecology & History

Intertidal

Using scientific sampling equipment students will study physical factors, identify adaptations in species with the aid of a staff Biologist, collect and study periwinkles, barnacles, on other tidal pool invertebrates while teaching students how not to leave their impact on the tidal pool.

Kayaking

Kayaking is an excellent way to spend the afternoon exploring our local Islands ecology and ecosystems. We almost always encounter marine mammals and other surprises on a kayak, lead by an experienced naturalist. Lunch can be provided as we stop and enjoy one of the many inviting beaches.

Hiking

After a few days at sea most students will gain a better appreciation of our local Islands aesthetics and flora and fauna from a different vantage point.

Fish & Urchin Dissection

Always popular the Urchin Dissection helps students study the anatomy in a hand’s on lab, while making for some interesting notes in their field journal.

Plankton Analysis

Using state of the art equipment students first collect Near Coastal Plankton, then observe them through microscopes. Live Plankton observation cannot be done in the classroom, when participants actually see what they have collected they will never look at the ocean the same way again.

Snorkeling

What better way to immerse yourself in our local waters observing fish behavior, Kelp forest. As Pacific Journey navigates to different ecosystems your snorkeling and kayaking experience will never be the same
